In order to help you learn how to use SME efficiently, this Manual is organized similar to your software. Chapters are arranged by: (1) basic information orienting you to SME, and setup and installation instructions; (2) SMEmodule operations; and(3) supporting information.

Note: Chapter 12: Reports is not included in thisdocument due to the size.It will be sent as a separate document.


The information and skills described inthis Manual are also covered in the online help feature. The help feature can be accessed from the SME Help Menu.


BeforeYouBegin
You must have Microsoft Windows NT®(or later) installed on your computer prior to installing and using SME. See your Windows documentation for information about how to install Windows.


The SME CD utilizes a Setup Wizard to install SME, which decompresses and installs the program files for you. For detailed instructions on installing SMEon your computer or network, see Chapter2.


SymbolsandConventions
The User Manual uses special Symbols & Conventions:


YourKeyboard
Your keyboard may be labeled differently than in this manual. Key names are indicated by the use of brackets. For example, the Control Key is referred to as [Ctrl], the Shift Key as [Sh], and the Escape Key as [Esc].


The Up, Down, Left and Right Arrow Keys are commonly referred to as “Arrow Keys,” or individually as [Up] [Down] [Left] and [Right].


Buttons are indicated by outlined text, such asOK andCancel. An underlined character in a button generally indicates a standard Windows [Alt] key procedure may be used. For instance, Cancel indicates that [Alt]+[C] may be used to operatethe button fromthe keyboard.


ManualText
Specific text that you should type is indicated in bold. For example, if the manual prompts you as follows:

In the Openfield, type SME5 data


you would type the lowercase letters “SME5” followed by a space and the lowercase word “data”.Letters will always beshown in lowercase, unless uppercase is required for the operation to work properly.


Items you must supply, such as file or directory names, are shown in italic.For example, if the manual prompts you as follows:


In the SaveAsfield, type c:\directory_name


you would type the characters “c:\” followed by the name of a directory. For a directory called “Apex,” you would type c:\apex


Procedures
Both the mouse and keyboard can be utilized to performmost actions in SME. In most instances, the instructions will describe mouse procedures. However, key procedures (or “hotkeys”), using theAltkey in conjunction with underlined characters to initiate commands, are also available throughout the software, asper standard Windows operations.

Notes, hints and shortcuts appearthroughout the procedures in this Manual. These items provide valuable information about commands, procedures and other tasks or items.
